Message Series: More Than Enough

Week 1

Scripture: Luke 5:27-32

Bottom Line: All are welcomed to Jesus' Table

Group Check in:

  1. How is it with your soul?

  2. Prayer Request? Praises?

  3. How has God shown up in your life this week?

Icebreaker:

  • Share your favorite memory of when you gathered around a table with family/friends. What made it so special?

Overview:

  • Meals were intimate times of sharing, to which Jesus invited the powerful and powerless, rich and poor, righteous and unrighteousness- everyone was invited to the table when Jesus was involved, and he never once said “I want fewer people at the heavenly banquet.” He didn’t force people to join him, but when they did, their lives were changed. We’re going to follow Jesus in Luke’s gospel and sit at the King’s table as we learn more about the One who saves us.

  • Jesus eats with everyone. The weary, the poor, the righteous, and even the corrupt. All are welcomed at his table.

  • Matthew 5:31-32 - Jesus responds by basically saying, healthy people don’t need a doctor, but those who are sick need one. Jesus seeks the sick to heal them.

  • We have all been on the outside and we have wondered, does it count for me too? Does Jesus count for me? And the answer is ABSOLUTELY YES!

  • Don’t hold people at arm's length. Our job, as the hands and feet of Jesus, is to embrace others and not hold back.

  • If we do not have the scripture, we do not hear the truth, the grace, the hope, and the love of Jesus. Without scripture, we only know the culturally side of Jesus.

  • The Bible shows us the grace and hope that can only be found in scripture.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What was something that stood out to you as you read this passage? Do you have any questions after reading this passage? If so, share and discuss with your group.

  2. Why was Jesus sharing a meal at Levi's house so frowned on by others?

  3. How is Jesus sharing a meal with Levi and his guest a way of showing the Gospel?

  4. Why do the sick go to the doctor? What is the connection that Jesus made between the sick and salvation?

  5. What did Jesus say his mission was? (Luke 5:32)

  6. Why might we be tempted to feel like the Pharisees and their scribes (vs 30)? What did they miss about Jesus and His mission?

  7. Have you ever excluded people from your table? Why? Have you ever been excluded? How did that make you feel?

  8. Who can you invite to your table this week? Consider having a dinner together as a small group sometime this week or in the coming weeks.
