Series Title: The Space Between | Week 4

Scripture: 2 Samuel 7

Bottom Line: Hold strong to the Hope of God.

Other Scripture References:

Book References

Group Check in:

  1. How is it with your soul?

  2. Prayer Request? Praises?

  3. How has God shown up in your life this week?

  4. This week, have others seen Jesus through you?

Icebreaker:

  • Would you consider yourself more of a patient or impatient person? Why?

Overview:

  • 2 Samuel 7- covenant with David

  • Isaiah 9- example of how this promise provided hope in crisis/exile

  • This message is about God’s covenant with David. This covenant doesn’t necessarily impact the people/place/presence that we’ve been tracking, but it does represent a sub covenant that prepares the ground for the Messiah that will one day restore people/place/presence. It is the high point from which we can see everything that happened before and everything that is yet to come.

  • David is a man after God’s heart (1st call story), man of music/worship (2nd call story), courageous faith (3rd call story (Goliath).

  • David establishes Jerusalem as the capital and home to the Tabernacle. Therefore, Jerusalem is called the city of David.

  • This is the taproot of messianic hope. How will the eternal kingdom be established? By means of an anointed son of David, upon whom Israel pegs its future and its hope.

  • When Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah are offering hope to the exiled people of God, they return to this passage to remember that God promised that there would be a Son of David who would claim David’s eternal thorn and who would be a Son of God (Is. 9:2, 6-7)

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do we cling to most in our moments of crisis?

  2. How do you respond during peaceful times? When we face hardships, we tend to turn to God for help and guidance, but when we are at rest, where do we turn our attention to?

  3. What did God promise to do for Israel in 2 Samuel 7:8-9?

  4. What did God promise to do for David (2 Samuel 7:11-13)? What kind of house did He mean?

  5. This passage shows us how important it is to let God build a house for us. Share examples of how you have seen and participated in God continuing to build His house, the church, in your small group?

  6. Read Isaiah 9:6-7. There are 4 names that describe Jesus in this passage: wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting father, Prince of Peace. What role of Jesus do you need right now?

Challenge:

We all know what it means to be in crisis. We all know what it’s like to grasp for something solid during that crisis. That’s what this hope is for. The gospel does not start in Matthew, it starts in the beginning where God is trying to bring us to His presence, place, people. This week, take time to spend with God. Pray for this hope and peace that only God can bring you.
