Message Series: More Than Enough

Week 5

Scripture: Luke 24:13-35

(The Walk to Emmaus - The night of Easter)

Bottom Line: Hope is found at His table.

Group Check in:

  1. How is it with your soul?

  2. Prayer Request? Praises?

  3. How has God shown up in your life this week?

Icebreaker:

  • Share your favorite Thanksgiving memory.

  • What is your favorite food at Thanksgiving?

Overview:

  • Meals provide 3 opportunities:

1. To Love each other

2. To Teach each other

3. To Challenge each other

  • In this passage, hope was a thing of the past. Hope was crucified on the cross. “But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place.” Luke 24:21

  • The last meal that we’re going to explore during this series is in Luke 24- the last chapter in Luke’s gospel. This is not the last meal that Luke shares. (We encourage you to read more of these stories in the weeks to come.)

  • The table was a place where Jesus was heard and where his presence came across most intimately. This fact suggests that Jesus reveals himself in the midst of the basic moments of life. He is at home during our everyday activity.

  • Meals were intimate times of sharing, to which Jesus invited the powerful and powerless, rich and poor, righteous and unrighteousness- everyone was invited to the table when Jesus was involved, and he never once said “I want fewer people at the heavenly banquet.”

  • Luke 24:13- Emmaus- I AM WITH YOU STILL

  • Luke 24:41- got anything to eat? I AM RISEN

  • In Luke 24, we witness a meal of recognition- the 2 disciples had burning hearts and it changes the trajectory of their lives and ours. They left in fear, confusion, and despair, but after their encounter with Jesus they return with courage, clarity and hope.

  • Most often, we find that when Jesus feeds us, we can’t stay where we are. When we invite Jesus into our homes, He feeds us in ways that open our eyes and drives us back into the world. Our brokenness is met by Jesus’ presence and assurance and we are transformed with courage, clarity and hope.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Christ displayed patience with the disciples' moments of unbelief and lack of understanding. How has Jesus shown patience with you in your moments of unbelief or lack of understanding?

  2. Who can you walk with as Jesus walked with the two disciples on the way to Emmaus?

  3. With whom can you break bread and reveal the identity of Jesus to?

  4. How will you use your gifts to meet their needs and help them meet Jesus?

  5. What do you feel most grateful to God for today?

  6. What are you most hopeful for going into the holiday season?

  7. We hope that Thanksgiving this year might be a little more robust for you as you gather with your people and share a meal- what could you do to invite the kinds of conversation Jesus had at your table?
