Icebreaker:
What was your favorite Bible story as a child? Why?
Overview:
What’s this message about? Those of us who grew up in church often learned bible stories as children that were told in imaginative ways that were engaging for the children who were listening. It helped foster a sense of excitement or interest in scripture, which was a great thing! Unfortunately, too often we fail to revisit those stories through an adult lens, which causes us to miss the extraordinary depth contained in these stories. They were chosen for us not just because they were exciting, but because they possessed incredible and memorable meaning. The Fall of Jericho is a great example. The power of the story isn’t the manner in which the city fell, although that’s the part that we (and our kid-counterparts) are drawn toward. Rather, the power of the story is God’s desire not only to make a way forward for his people, but His commitment to protect them as they move into a new future.
Jericho was the first battle west of Jordan and it set the stage for conquest of Canaan. The battles ahead were the Lord's battles, and Isreal needed to trust Him going into every battle.
Trusting the Lord to guard their backs was far more effective that refortification. By refusing to rebuild the city, Joshua was true to the meaning of his name: yeshua, “the lord will rescue.”
God doesn't just provide just enough for us, but He gives you all you need.
God is with with you and will protect you.
Discussion Questions:
What can we learn from God’s command to the people in this chapter?
What can we learn from the people’s response?
Joshua 6 is a great chapter about listening to God, trusting and obeying Him, and our faithfulness to Him. Do you have a "Jericho" in your life? If so, what can you learn from this story that will help you conquer your "Jericho?"
If God already knew that Jericho would fall (Joshua 6:2), then why did He tell Israel to go through all the steps to make it fall? What does this tell us about faith?
What kind of Jericho (barrier/walls) are you and your group/church facing right now? How does God's faithfulness revealed in Joshua 6 towards the Israelites give you hope in our circumstances?
Spend some time this week praying about what God is teaching you during this series called True-ish. Pray for the courage and faithfulness to hear God and to follow His lead. Also, take the time to dive deeper into each story as we rediscover some of our favorite Bible stories during this series.
