Message Series: GO & BE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16

Other Scripture References:

Group Check in:

  1. How is it with your soul?

  2. Prayer Request? Praises?

  3. How has God shown up in your life this week?

Icebreaker:

  • How do you give back to your community?

  • Do you have a favorite organization that you like to serve with?

Overview:

  • Jesus traveled and taught in synagogues, announcing God’s kingdom, and healing the sick and afflicted.

  • The news spread across the entire region, not just Israel but from Syria and the “region beyond the Jordan river." Large crowds began to follow Jesus.

  • Jesus taught the crowd, recorded in “the sermon on the mount" (Matthew 5,6, & 7). Much of the core of what we revere as Jesus’ teaching are focus on in Matthew 5:14-16.

  • “You are the light of the world.” This is a statement of identity & purpose for who people listen to and follow after Jesus.

  • We are darkness disruptors. Darkness is the default condition of the world, until light disrupts it.

  • Everywhere the light goes, darkness flees. THis is why we are called to be the light of the world.

  • “A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.” - Light isn’t meant to be kept. It’s meant to be shared.

  • Jesus calls his followers to be the light and disrupt the darkness of the world. To do any less is simply an absurdity.

  • Jesus clearly makes it our responsibility to serve in the world and to be the light in what all that we do.

  • Think of it not as “what we have to do”, but as “what we get to do”\

Discussion Questions:

  1. What’s the relationship between faith and works?

  2. How do you interpret the statement “you can’t out give God?”

  3. What are the personal rewards for serving Christ in the world?

  4. Is serving Christ in the world something we have to do, or something we get to do?
