Message Title: Collison Coming!

Palm Sunday

Scripture: Luke 19:28-40 NRSV

Bottom Line: This week, no matter what’s going on in our lives, it’s time to lay it all aside, and turn our full attention on Jesus as He arrives in Jerusalem on HIS WAY to our cross.

Small Group Check in:

  1. How is it with your soul?

  2. Prayer Request? Praises?

Ice Breaker:

  1. Did you grow up celebrating Palm Sunday? If so, what memories do you have of those worship celebrations?

Overview:

  • In this passage, Luke tells the story of Jesus coming to Jerusalem for the last time.

  • Palm Sunday, in Luke’s story, is the story of two powers colliding head on. One train is the Earthly power that takes, oppresses, forces, and breaks the will of the weak and the other train is Heavenly Power – embodied in Jesus, a power that gives, heals, restores, builds up, reconciles.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How can heavenly humility defeat earthly arrogance?

  2. How can Peace really defeat Power?

  3. How can a grown man on a small donkey overcome the hopelessness of broken people and the power of a foreign conqueror who shows no mercy whatsoever?

  4. What can you learn from Jesus' demeanor, emotions, and interactions that you can imitate as a follower of Christ?

  5. Read Luke 19:28-34. How specific are Jesus' commands to the disciples?

  6. What is the significance of Jesus riding in on a colt that has never been ridden before? Why didn't He just walk to the city? See Zechariah 9:9.

  7. What does this text tell us about the faithfulness of God?

  8. Discuss Jesus' response to the Pharisees. What does he mean "the very stones would cry out"?

  9. What does his response say about who He claims to be?

  10. How will you prepare yourself for Easter during Holy Week? What can you do to make it a meaningful time of preparation for Easter?

Challenge:

  • We encourage you to reflect, pray, and engage this week as we enter Holy Week. We challenge your small group to join us this week as we walk together through Jesus' final week. Join us for our Holy Thursday and Good Friday services at 7PM in the Traditional Worship Center and then again on Sunday, April 17th as we celebrate Easter!
